Joe Szurszewski (sure-CHEF-ski) is an award-winning photographer and experienced photojournalist based in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis & St Paul, Minnesota. He captures memorable images for a diverse clientele of regional, national, and international organizations and publications. Joe specializes in producing authentic portraits that capture his subjects' unique personalities. He also excels at creatively covering meetings & events and industrial & construction activity with a balance of artistry and technical skill. Whether on location, in the studio, or doing detailed post-processing, Joe is a lifelong learner with a passion for his craft and also for learning about your organization so he can deliver the best possible photographs for your needs.
Joe's photographic career started early. He began shooting professionally at age sixteen when his school district was facing a teachers' strike. As the midnight strike deadline loomed, Joe discovered where last-minute negotiations were taking place and talked his way into the building. When an agreement was finally reached, Joe got the shot he was after: A handshake between the leaders from both sides, with a clock in the background reading just after 2 am. The moment that photo went out on the Associated Press wire, he was hooked on photography. Joe soon began freelancing for his hometown daily newspaper.
Joe's experience shooting for publication means he is at ease working on tight deadlines and quickly delivering his work electronically. His philosophy of editorial shooting is to prepare, pay attention, and be patient. As a result, he has a reputation for delivering striking images that complement a wide range of stories, from breaking news and sports to in-depth features and profiles. Joe is a member of the National Press Photographer's Association and follows their Code of Ethics.
Lifestyle photography and environmental portraiture are art forms in which Joe's talent shines. He researches his subjects so he can portray them in just the right light and setting, and his relaxed and friendly working style puts subjects at ease. These skills result in efficient and enjoyable photo shoots and more natural, authentic, and appealing photographs.
Industrial photography, including the construction, manufacturing, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing industries, is another photographic specialty of Joe's. He is at home working in construction areas and experienced in following safety protocols. Joe is adept at seeing beyond the gear and equipment to capture images showing the relationship of people to the technology.
Joe also has extensive experience photographing corporate, association and non-profit events including sales meetings, trade shows, conventions, association conferences, technical workshops, annual meetings, training seminars, academic symposia, and many other types of live events. He can deliver photos during your event, allowing you to generate blog posts, send email blasts, or update social media while your event takes place. Joe is committed to documenting your events' meaningful moments in ways that will drive the success of your future marketing.
For a clear and unique photographic vision, Joe Szurszewski Photography offers the collaboration, expertise, and talent you're looking for to elevate your project.

What Joe's clients say
You really nailed the assignment and I appreciate it. You've given me images that'll enable the story about the training program to sail, and [my client] looks great as a result. Your work is top drawer. You've captured the essence of the training with flair; the images almost get readers into the classroom. And if they haven't been there, they'll want to be. It raises the bar real nicely for training programs in our industry.

I just wanted you to know that I adore your pictures from our event. They are BEAUTIFUL. There are so many in there that we will use endlessly for different things. What I loved about your shooting style was that it was non-intrusive. Half the time, I don’t think our families realized you were there. The result was really intimate pictures, which captured the essence of our Starlight children and this program. I would definitely use your services again for one of our events. Maura Trout, Program CoordinatorStarlight Children's Foundation
We contracted with Joe Szurszewski to take photos at our national conference in Minneapolis. He was wonderful to work with, always showed up on time for each session we needed photographed, and was willing to work beyond the hours we had originally agreed upon at the last minute. His professional demeanor made it seamless for him to work with attendees, board members, and celebrity speakers alike. The quality of his photos was among the best we have seen from the many years we have been photographing our conferences. Sarah Brachman, Communications Manager Independent Educational Consultants Association
I’m happy to have the opportunity to provide a reference for Joe Szurszewski. Joe has photographed nine annual conferences for the American Planning Association in cities from Boston to Los Angeles. His photos are of outstanding quality and we use them throughout the year on our website, in our e-newsletter, and in ads and marketing collateral. He has a gift for capturing fleeting details that reveal an individual personality or the ambiance of a conference session or social event. Joe uses lighting, angles, and position to take unique and interesting images and I’m always impressed by the array and quality of the equipment he uses to get those great shots. Joe works incredibly hard and is always willing to do more if we need him. He won’t hesitate to make suggestions to improve an individual photograph or overall coverage. He’s great at photographing groups, using a combination of firmness and tact to wrangle people into position and stay there with their eyes open. And he’s a personable, friendly guy who obviously enjoys what he’s doing and the people he’s working with. Joe is curious and genuinely interested in the people he meets and the topics discussed in the rooms he photographs. Sally Lambertson, Senior Marketing Editor American Planning Association
Joe took photographs for the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority's (MPHA) Annual Report/18 month calendar. The calendar featured photographs of residents participating in various programs of the MPHA. He took the time to learn about our programs prior to photographing residents and their families. He was very flexible with his time. He interacted very well with the residents and their families. He made them feel comfortable and natural around him so inevitably his photographs were GREAT! MPHA would highly recommend his services. Bob Boyd, Director of Policy & Special Initiatives Minneapolis Public Housing Authority
